Jack Sprat

Jack Sprat could eat no fat,
His wife could eat no lean,
And so between them both you'll see,
They licked the platter clean.

This rhyme was first published in 1639

In medieval times the name Jack Sprat was often given to people who were short or thin and the rhyme is attributing this to the fact that they did not eat enough fat in their diet.
